Los Angeles, CA – On Tuesday, October 15, 2024, Tribal, federal, state, and local partners came together to celebrate a $3.5 million investment to help improve access and water quality on the East Fork of the San Gabriel River in the recently expanded San Gabriel Mountains National Monument.

This investment will help Tribes, community groups, the Watershed Conservation Authority, and the USDA Forest Service to create new walking trails, install more restrooms, and protect a watershed that provides one third of Los Angeles’ drinking water.

The Nature for All Coalition is proud to have advocated for more funding to this area during our campaign to expand the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument earlier this year. The East Fork of the San Gabriel River is a popular and special recreation area for surrounding under-resourced communities who seek refuge from the heat in the Summer and look to escape the city and connect to nature throughout the year.

As the Nature for All Coalition celebrates the recent expansion of the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument and these investments in the East Fork, we acknowledge that there is much more work to do in order to ensure that BIPOC communities have a safe and dignified experience in these natural places. The Nature for All Coalition will continue to advocate for the preservation of the San Gabriel Mountains, resources to establish proper visitor management that uplift the need to provide a safe environment and a dignified experience, for all who visit and work in our local mountains.

We congratulate the Watershed Conservation Authority and collaborative partners. We look forward to supporting these projects as we continue to build our next generation of diverse environmental leaders!
