Brian’s project connected families from Compton’s equestrian communities to the forest.

Brian and Bob Dollins, an experienced Eaton Canyon Docent, led participants on a walk at Eaton Canyon Falls Trail.
For the Leadership Academy Capstone Project, Brian partnered with the organization Connecting Compton in order to expose their community to Los Angeles’ local forest. Connecting Compton is a community organization which grew out of Compton’s equestrian heritage.
Before taking the Connecting Compton community out to the forest, Brian held an information session. This session was open to all in the community, regardless of their participation on the outing. During the session, community members were able to see and touch mammal pelts, bones, print castings as well as bird, reptile and plant specimens.

After the informational session, Brian led the Connecting Compton community on an outing to Eaton Canyon Falls Trail. Those who attended the informational session were able to identify some plants by sight and smell. The group was led by Bob Dollins, an experienced Eaton Canyon Docent, who talked about the 7 Leave No Trace Principles and answered questions about local flora and fauna. Along the way, multi generational families enjoyed a roughly 1 mile loop to the falls, where they were able to splash in the clear water and rest. All of the participants practiced recreating responsibly by picking up trash along the trail. The group carried out one 30 gallon trash bag while walking one mile round trip!

After the walk, participants were able to understand that our Urban Forests can combat Urban Heat Islands and sequester carbon almost as effectively as our Pine forests in the Angeles. They asked a lot of great questions and discussed how they felt motivated to spend more time outdoors and to take care of our natural spaces.
We are proud of Brian for all of his work and dedication to make this project a success. We are also grateful to Connecting Compton for partnering with Brian and to LA2050 and USDA Forest Health Protection for making these projects possible.
