At our event with the Sierra Club Angeles Chapter’s Forest Committee this week, Ron Romanek of the Watershed Conservation Authority gave a presentation of the East Fork Project, which promises to transform recreation along the heavily visited areas of the San Gabriel River north of Azusa in the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument. Plans are intended to balance public enjoyment with site protection — to promote stewardship of public lands, protect watershed ecosystems, enhance quality of recreation, and promote ecological restoration. Proposed models being considered include toilet facilities, trash cans and dumpsters, picnic amenities and access paths to the river, as well as improved parking capacity.
