What a great day celebrating the one-year anniversary of the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument at the Oaks Picnic Area! Best part about it: we got our hands dirty making improvements right at the site—planting native species, staining signs, spreading mulch, and painting garbage cans as part of the Convert-a-Can project of our Leadership Academy. A new sign for the Oaks Picnic Area was unveiled, as well as tri-lingual signage, and improved restrooms.

A ceremony kicked off the celebration, with remarks by Jeffrey Vail, Forest Supervisor; Robert Bonnie, USDA Under Secretary for Natural Resources and Environment; Mary Wagner, U.S. Forest Service Associate Chief; and Congresswoman Judy Chu, who shared that she plans to introduce a new bill that will expand the monument to the west.
