We are thrilled to share that we have a new program! Keep Our River Beautiful: San Gabriel Mountains River – East Fork Program. Our goal with this program is to train multilingual youth as outreach river ambassadors to the thousands of families who flock to the river each weekend, so that we may improve the health of our watersheds.
The San Gabriel Mountains River – East Fork Program will re-start a successful public engagement program that lost funding several years ago. The program will train multilingual youth as outreach river ambassadors to the thousands of families who flock to the river each weekend, leaving trash and at times feces which has led to an “F rating” by the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board and “impaired waterway” status by the California Environmental Protection Agency. With culturally relevant rangers sharing “Leave No Trace” education, the program will spread environmental stewardship ethics, restore sensitive habitat, public health and water quality in a sensitive wilderness area and provide a further model to expand the program to LA County’s urban rivers.
Location: 14 miles north of Azusa in the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument at the extremely popular East Fork of the San Gabriel River, where thousands of visitors play in the river on warm weekends.
